Firefighters were called at around 4:40 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, for a fire at a Melville house located on Wilmington Drive near Westbourne Lane.

Nearly 100 firefighters from multiple departments spent two hours working to get the fire under control, officials said.

Flames eventually spread to much of the home, causing its roof to collapse.

The blaze was deemed under control by 6:30 a.m.

Crews spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon using excavators to search the debris for any victims.

Shortly after 1 p.m., Suffolk County Police said a man’s remains were found at the site.

The man’s identity and cause of death will be determined during an autopsy by personnel from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.

There were no other reports of injuries.

The fire is believed to have been started by a propane tank that exploded in a shed before flames spread to the main house, officials said.
